John Fry was born in Pittsburgh and raised in a Christian home in western Pennsylvania, first in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, then on a farm outside of Grove City, PA. His family attended Calvary OPC in Harrisville, PA, he attended to Christian schools from grades three through high school. During high school, God used a youth leader to challenge him personally to repent and believe in the gospel.
John attended Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA, where he met his future wife Paula Gillespie. They were married in 1992 and lived briefly in Troy, Alabama, before moving back to Pittsburgh. He subsequently studied history at Duquesne University and then the University of Iowa, where he received a Ph. D. in American History in 2002. They have four children: Deborah, Stephen, Benjamin, and Daniel. In 2003, they moved to Blue Island so that John could teach history at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights. They became members of Westminster that year. He has been a ruling elder at Westminster since 2011.
